Movie Music Monday: A.R. Rahman returns live to Southern California with old & new film favorites

Film Flam Flummox

Oscar®- and Grammy-winning composer/songwriter/musician/singer A.R. Rahman's return to the Southern California stage after three years didn't have a overarching theme unlike that last concert in 2015--"The Intimate Concert," leaning heavily on his ballad work and featuring a number of stripped down arrangements and orchestrations for most of the selections--but the more typically grab bag approach still made for a filling three hours of memorable melodies culled from various points in Rahman's decades-long career in music and film at his second 2018 North American concert tour stop yesterday, Sunday, August 19, at the Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center.

While such an enduring career with massively prolific output (all the greater, considering he works in all three of India's primarily film industries, Tamil/Kollywood, Hindi/Bollywood, and Telugu/Tollywood) leaves seemingly near-infinite options to fill a decidedly finite concert set list, as with any celebrated artist, there are certain hallmark works that are almost required to be covered. The two films most represented, as the case in the previous concert, were Subhash Ghai's lavish 1999 drama Taal and a tonal polar opposite, Mani Ratnam's dark 1998 romance Dil Se... While various tunes from both films have been staples in live shows, and indeed favorites such as "Taal Se Taal" from the former and "Dil Se Re" and "Jiya Jale" from the latter (though, as in 2015, not Dil Se..'s most known song, "Chaiyya Chaiyya") were performed, Rahman took the opportunity to give some of them some new twists. "Dil Se Re" was given an unexpectedly jazzy treatment in its instrumentation, particularly in interludes between verses; "Taal Se Taal"'s pulsing rhythms were lent a hard-rock edge; "Nahin Samne" from Taal, originally a solo male number, into a male/female duet for this show, as it was adapted into in English for the Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced stage musical Bombay Dreams. Given that twist given to that last song, I fully expected the performance of that song to at one point switch into the lyrics of that English language adaptation, "Closer Than Ever," but it never did--which leads to one disappointment this time as compared to the Intimate Tour. That time around, Rahman made the inspired decision to do multilingual mashup renditions of a few songs that were recorded in different languages, which given his roots and massive following in the southern region of India, was an inspired move of inclusion for his Tamil/Telugu base in a generally Hindi-leaning show. (It also led to some surprising and refreshing numbers, such as a beautiful blend of Taal's "Ishq Bina" with its English language Bombay Dreams counterpart, "Love's Never Easy.") This time, however, the tunes stuck to a single language, and that left those wanting a bit more balance between his North and South Indian output somewhat let down.

Also a bit of a letdown was the general underuse of the legendary Udit Narayan, who, along with Neeti Mohan, Jonita Gandhi, Haricharan, Javed Ali, and Linda Lind, were the featured vocalists on the show. Narayan's involvement would lead one to expect Rahman's work from his pre-Slumdog Millionaire international breakthrough, Ashutosh Gowariker's 2001 Foreign Language Film Oscar® nominee Lagaan, to be prominently featured, but alas that score was relegated to brief snippets in a general medley portion of the show; he also only got a couple of solo spotlight moments. Still, that was more than Ali and Haricharan, for the male singers in general took a back seat to ladies, namely Mohan and Gandhi. This did not make for any less of a show, for Mohan and Gandhi were electrifying performers in fine voice, and Lind held her own in the two big English language numbers of the night ("Shakalaka Baby" and, most unexpectedly, the Pussycat Dolls version of Slumdog's Oscar®-winning "Jai Ho," which naturally was the grand finale) but it would have been nice to hear, say, Haricharan tackle the power ballad "Ennodu Nee Irundhaal" from Shankar's 2015 science fiction romance i as he did in most cities in the Intimate Concert tour. (Sid Sriram, the original singer for the film, made a special guest appearance for that song at the Los Angeles stop at that tour, and it was a true showstopper.

But these quibbles, also including a sometimes curious set list that left some anticipated fan favorites glaringly absent, proved to be just that--quibbles, and minor ones at that, for even when the tunes were less familiar, Rahman, his singers, and the spectacular band never gave less than their all. Rahman's general stage demeanor remains fairly reserved as it always has been, but the voice still soars, as does his piano playing, and he does come out of his shell and to rousing life in the concert's final, upbeat stretch--especially on vintage Tamil selections such as the original"Humma" from Mani Ratnam's 1995 Bombay (not the more recent Hindi retooling of the tune, titled "The Humma Song," from last year's OK Jaanu) and "Mustafa Mustafa" from 1996's Kadhal Desam. But as in all his live shows, it's not so much Rahman the performer who is the star attraction, but those gorgeous, eternal compositions of his, and that one is left wanting so much more music after a packed three hours is a testament to his incredible gift--and what a gift he is to music and film fans the world over.

A.R. Rahman continues his tour in America through the rest of August to mid-September with stops in Atlanta (August 25); Washington, DC (August 31); New York (September 1); Seattle (September 7); Dallas (September 8); Chicago (September 14); and Houston (September 15). A.R. Rahman brings an Intimate Concert to Los Angeles

Film Flam Flummox

Last night, Wednesday, June 10, 2015, will go down in history in the Los Angeles entertainment scene, for it marked the first event to be held at the newly rechristened Microsoft Theatre L.A. Live, which since its opening in 2007 had been known as the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. It's fitting, then, that the answer to the inevitable trivia question of who or what played the first official Microsoft Theatre show would be no less than a pioneering and iconic figure in the global music and film scene, Academy Award®- and Grammy-award winning composer A.R. Rahman, whose work has famously, historically bridged the worlds of Bollywood and Hollywood and the general entertainment culture spheres of India and America.

The Rahman project most responsible for building that bridge is, of course, Danny Boyle's 2008 sleeper sensation Slumdog Millionaire, for which he won the Oscars® for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, for the rousing closing credits anthem "Jai Ho." Predictably, that particular tune was reserved for the concert's finale, not only for its conception as a conclusion and its celebratory spirit, but also because it's likely the one song of his that Western audience members are most familiar. But in the terrifically tuneful, intermission-free three hours (!) that preceded that number, Rahman, his talented orchestra musicians, and a gifted team of featured guest vocalists familiarized those acquainted only with Slumdog and his other Oscar®-nominated score and song from Boyle's 2010 drama 127 Hours with a rich and richly rewarding set that covered substantial ground from his decades-long career in India up to his Hollywood credits.

As a longtime admirer of Rahman's work since I first saw Ashutosh Gowariker's Foreign Language Film nominee Lagaan in 2001, I was pleased and impressed by the varied set list, which dug deep into his dense catalog. Classics from various points in his filmography were included, and sometimes the choices were a little unexpected, such as including the ominous title track "Dil Se Re" from Mani Ratnam's 1998 drama Dil Se.., but not the most famous number from that film, "Chaiiya Chaiiya," which Spike Lee later used in Inside Man. The nods to his stature in both his native Tamil/Kollywood film industry and the more widely known Hindi/Bollywood sphere manifested in an unexpectedly refreshing way in bilingual mashup numbers. Two songs from Shaad Ali's hit 2002 Hindi romance Saathiya seamlessly switched back and forth with the Tamil lyrics from the film of which it is a remake, Ratnam's Alaipayuthey (2000); an even more surprising code switch came during Jonita Gandhi's performance of the timelessly smooth and soothing "Ishq Bina" from Subash Ghai's Taal (1999), which was mixed with lyricist Don Black's English language adaptation "Love's Never Easy" for Rahman's stage musical produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bombay Dreams. The largely South Asian audience seemed to share in my enthusiasm with the wide-spanning program, but the big surprise for me was which number got the most ecstatic reaction from the crowd: "Mental Manadhil" from this spring's Ratnam-directed Tamil-language OK Kanmani, which had audience members literally crowding the aisles to dance.

While uptempo numbers such as that one were not in short supply, this tour is billed as "The Intimate Concert" for good reason, and the melodic, heartfelt ballads proved to be the driving force for the night and provided what I consider not only the defining showstopper for the show but a perfect encapsulation of Rahman's talents as a composer, performer, and music collaborator. The one song I was hoping would be included in the show--the Jim Steinman-reminiscent epic tearjerker "Ennodu Nee Nee Irundhaal" from Shankar's Tamil-language fantasy/action/romance i, which opened in January--not only was, but was performed, in an unannounced guest appearance, by the singer who originally recorded the song for the film, Sid Sriram, accompanied by Gandhi for a verse. The intensely emotional song is not only a testament to Rahman's melodic gift, but in simply playing the piano for this number while Sriram (who proves to be an even more emotive and powerful vocalist live) got a well deserved standing ovation-worthy spotlight moment and various other instrumentalists had solo moments, he also showed what a generous artist and team player he is. No doubt that attitude, in support of other artists and the greater good of music in general, will spell many more years to come for Rahman in the global music and film arenas.

A.R. Rahman continues his Intimate Concert tour for three more dates in North America, two dates in San Jose, California tonight, Thursday, June 11, and Friday, June 12; then this leg of the tour concludes in Redmond, Washington on Sunday, June 14.

Film Flam Flummox

PRESS RELEASE

KOCHADAIIYAAN COULD SEE
BIGGEST U.S. RELEASE EVER

The magnum opus feature film Kochadaiiyaan: The Legend starring the emperor of Indian cinema Rajinikanth and the reigning Queen of Indian Cinema Deepika Padukone, is set to blaze a trail globally in cutting-edge Motion Capturing with Photorealistic Technology. ATMUS Entertainment is proud to acquire the USA theatrical distribution rights of the Tamil & Telugu versions of the film. Telugu version is coming as Vikramasimha. The movie is releasing worldwide on 09-May-2014 with 3D Premieres in USA on 08-May-2014.

Referred to as India's first of its kind, Kochadaiiyaan is the first Indian film to use full performance capture in its production process, a workflow that was pioneered and optimized on James Cameron's Avatar, in less than 5% budget of Avatar.

Director Soundarya Rajnikanth Ashwin has explored the use of full performance capture in Kochadaiiyaan in its full magnitude. The film's uniqueness also stems from the fact this project combines many modern-era technologies to aid in visual storytelling and bring to life mythological India. The Indian film industry has lauded Soundarya's effort. Soundarya R Ashwin was honored for Technical Innovation in film at the NDTV Indian of the Year awards.

South Indian megastar Rajinikanth is cast as the archetypal superhero in the epic dramatization of good versus evil. He performs a dual role with the reigning Queen of Indian Cinema Deepika being paired opposite the younger character. They are joined by current and veteran stars of North and South Indian Cinema such as Jackie Shroff, Shobana and R. Sarathkumar for a global, Pan-Indian cinematic treat. The film is written by ace director K S Ravikumar with music by A R Rahman.

India's first Photorealistic Performance Capture film Kochadaiiyaan: The Legend is not only set to transcend boundaries creating a market first in the realm of world cinema but will cement Indian Cinema's place indefinitely within the global film fraternity.

Expectations for Kochadaiiyaan are sky high since this is Rajini's first film after a long gap due to his illness. The superstar's last outing Enthiran: The Robot was released in 2010 and it was one of the highest-grossing Indian films. There is a huge demand for the screening rights. This is the first time we have large theater chains competing to screen this movie. The movie is sure to entertain the overseas audience and the drive to the theaters is worth.

ATMUS, with its marketing partner AZ India Media is taking every efforts to make it a biggest South Indian release in the USA. Movie Music Monday: "Will You Cross the Skies for Me?"

Film Flam Flummox

I've already shone the Movie Music Monday spotlight on a tune from A.R. Rahman's score for Gautham Vasudev Menon's films Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa / Ye Maaya Chesave / Ekk Deewana Tha, but the last week I've had the title tune for the first and best version of the film, 2010's Tamil language Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, running through my head. Translated into English as "Will You Cross the Skies for Me?", this beautiful romantic tune and scene, featuring the gorgeously poetic lyrics of Thamarai, shows how this version film gets it right between all three: how Rahman's hypnotic melody, Thamarai's evocative words, and Karthik's soothing croon symbiotically support the yearning chemistry, erotic electricity, and sensual tension between Silambarasan and Trisha.

A review of the Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa Blu-ray is coming soon.

Movie Music Monday: A.R. Rahman triple play

Film Flam Flummox

For my first installment of Movie Music Monday, a triple taste of this catchy, soothingly laid back groove composed by A.R. Rahman as it appears in director Gautam Vasudev Menon's three different versions of his same romantic drama: "Omana Penne" ("My Beloved") in the 2010 Tamil language original Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (Will You Cross the Skies for Me?); "Kundanapu Bomma" ("Beautiful Doll") in the simultaneously shot Telugu language alternate cut Ye Maaya Chesave (What Magic Have You Done to Me?); and "Phoolon Jaisi" ("Like Blossoms") in the Fox-produced Hindi language version released in cinemas in February of this year, Ekk Deewana Tha (There Was a Crazy Guy). While all three takes use the same tune and are made by the same director, the differences in setting, staging, and choreography, in addition to the different approaches by the different pairs of actors, make for an interesting study.

Movie Music Monday: 3 Indian film songs that should've been up for Oscars 2011

Film Flam Flummox

While (however rightly or wrongly) largely perceived as the authoritative barometer on the quality of any year in film, there remains one oft-overlooked fact about the Academy Awards: to even be considered for a nomination, the film has to officially be entered to the Academy. While this is a no-brainer move for all high-profile studio film and indie awards bait, a lot of more lower-profile theatrical releases end up not being submitted at all--and more often than not, the distributors of Indian cinema in North America do not bother with the paperwork. While understandable, for 2011 it's a bit of a crying shame, for this past year saw Hollywood studios make further inroads into the Indian film industry as a whole (not just Hindi-language Bollywood, but regional language cinema as well, as I will note below). Most of all, though, it's an even bigger waste considering only a paltry two songs were nominated for the Best Original Song category this year--a category that, if even a fraction of the many Indian films that get a typical 60-100 screen theatrical release in America in any given year (and the biggest of which routinely open in the box office top 20), India would rightly dominate. Given the love showered on the music of the India-set British film Slumdog Millionaire back in 2008, this isn't such a far-fetched prospect. But since only one fairly obscure Indian film (so obscure it wasn't even on my radar) bothered to submit for 2011 Oscars consideration, some of the best songs written expressly for film will continue to go unrecognized. The following are three 2011 Indian film songs that I feel should've been in the consideration pool, especially when going by the Academy nominating standard of rewarding contextual use within the film.

"Prema Lekha" from Anaganaga O Dheerudu (Once Upon a Warrior)

2011 began with a surprising expansion of Hollywood's interest in Indian cinema as Disney, already having dipped their toe into traditional Bollywood (read: Hindi-language film) in 2008 with the animated feature Roadside Romeo, forayed into regional Telugu language cinema in spectacular fashion last January with what is pretty much a traditional Disney animated musical adventure--that happens to be live action. And in Telugu. The central love duet composed by the duo Salim-Sulaiman, "Prema Lekha" ("Your Love"), is in the tradition of Disney romantic songs that have won trophies in the past, not to mention is paired with some truly beautiful visuals and vibrant fantasy costuming; one can easily see these characters appear as regulars in a hypothetical Indian Disneyland.

Buy the Anaganaga O Dheerudu DVD here.

"Saadda Haq" from Rockstar

On the whole, Imtiaz Ali's drama about a simple musician's transformation, for better or worse, into the title celebrity is an uneven, underachieving film, but what met and exceeded expectations was the song score by established Academy favorite A.R. Rahman. "Saadda Haq" ("Our Right") is a great example of what a film song should be: narratively, it is an important touchstone for the story and character, as it marks both when he reaches the height of fame and perhaps loses his soul; musically and lyrically (Irshad Kamil penned the words), it's a wildly rousing rock anthem of rebellion bolstered by searing lead guitar work by Orianthi, best known as Michael Jackson's guitarist on This Is It. (Make sure the English subtitles are enabled in the clip below by clicking on the "CC" for captions.)

Buy the Rockstar soundtrack here.

"Chammak Challo" from Ra.One

If there's any song non-submission that disappoints, frustrates, and even slightly angers me the most, it's this infectious dance number, composed by the team of Vishal & Shekhar with lyrics by Niranjan Iyengar. What makes Eros Entertainment's non-entry into the fray all the more baffling is that not only did they actually have a big premiere event for this big-budget science fiction adventure in Los Angeles this past October, but at no less than the Academy's own lavish Samuel Goldwyn Theatre at their Beverly Hills headquarters. Alas, what a great missed opportunity for an Oscar performance for the ages--multi-Grammy-nominated R&B/hip-hop artist/songwriter/producer Akon singing in Hindi as global superstar Shahrukh Khan leads a troupe of dancers? Oh, what could've been...
