Unfortunately, despite months of precursor coverage and preparation, certain circumstances (namely, the failure to successfully negotiate a travel sponsorship with the powers that be) prevented me from doing the extensive in-person coverage I had long planned for all of the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend goings-on and the city of Tampa itself, which I have never visited. Hopefully the next time IIFA/Wizcraft holds the event in the States, those plans will come to pass. In the meantime, here is the complete list of winners for the night (not counting the winners of the technical awards handed out at a separate ceremony the evening prior), with last summer's critically and popularly acclaimed sports biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Run Milkha Run) taking home the most, with five awards.
In only the last 13 years, Farhan Akhtar has carved out not only one of the most successful and uniquely varied careers in Bollywood, but the entirety of cinema as a whole. He first burst onto the scene at the ripe young age of 27 as writer/director of what would become one of the most influential films in Indian film history, 2001's remarkably assured and polished romantic dramedy Dil Chahta Hai, which set a standard for contemporary Bollywood balance of narrative and character focus and Hollywood-level technical sheen with India's unique, more fancifully freewheeling cinematic storytelling traditions. That out-of-the-box success naturally led to a healthy career as not only writer/director (most notably for the action-packed Donfranchise) but an even more prolific one as a producer under his shingle Excel Entertainment. However, 2008 saw his career take a more unusual turn for someone so well established behind the camera: a turn to the front, with the film Rock On!!, in which Akhtar starred as the lead but also (in a most uncommon move in the typically lip-synched world of Bollywood) lent his own voice to the soundtrack. Thus not only was Farhan Akhtar the film actor born, so was Farhan Akhtar the rock star, and now he and his band regularly tour throughout India and the world while still maintaining a fully-loaded docket of film projects in all his many capacities.
At this weekend's 15th annual Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend and Tata Motors IIFA Awards in Tampa Bay, Florida, Akhtar is one of the main star attractions, serving as co-host of the latter but also making his live musical debut in the States at the IIFA Rocks music and fashion extravaganza held on the second evening of the four-day event. To commemorate the occasion and in recognition of one of the film world's most versatile and accomplished talents on the eve of his largest global spotlight to date, I offer this excerpt from his MTV Unplugged episode from this past November--a spirited rendition of the wildly infectious, Latin-flavored tune "Señorita" from the 2011 buddy comedy Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, in which Akhtar co-starred, produced, and provided vocals.

Titled I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro, Anupam Kher’s short film will have a World Premiere at IIFA on the 2nd day of the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend. The premiere will be open to celebrities from the Indian film fraternity, who will be seen attending the screening and lending support to the veteran actor. Through the film, Kher has paid tribute to iconic Hollywood actor Robert De Niro, his co-star from the Oscar nominated film- Silver Linings Playbook. The film’s writer and main actor, Shivangi Kshirsagar, who actually did go shopping for De Niro describes the film as wild, feminine, and brazen. She portrays the role of the girl who goes shopping for De Niro in the short-film and has tried to best represent what she has seen of De Niro’s work in the 29-minute short film.
Actor, Anupam Kher spoke of the film saying, “The film has had an exciting journey which came a sort of full circle for us on 10th November, 2013, when Mr De Niro visited our (acting) school and met the team. It was a very special occasion and I invited some prominent actors and directors from the Indian film industry to meet him. It was fun to watch some of our biggest stars sit around him – like students who crowd around their guru -- while De Niro patiently answered questions about his work, characters, scripts, co-actors, his films, his associations with filmmakers, etc. He graciously signed books, pictures and DVDs for everyone. It was such a memorable evening. He wrote a note for my students and teachers as well.”

Tampa Bay will bear witness to superstar, Hrithik Roshan’s signature moves as the ace performer takes to the Tata Motors IIFA Awards this year. 7th March 2014: The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) today announced that renowned actor, Kevin Spacey will join its IIFA Master Class Panel during the 15th Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend in Tampa Bay, Florida. The IIFA panel is one of the myriad sub-events that takes place during the main Weekend where keen participants attempt to delve into the minds of masters from world’s most flourishing and prolific entertainment industries; Hollywood and Indian Film Industry.
In addition to his Academy Award® winning performances in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty, as well as memorable performances in Se7en, Beyond the Sea and his most recent role as Francis Underwood in House of Cards, Kevin Spacey has a rich history in the theater world and has been the Artistic Director of the Old Vic Theater Company in London for the last decade. Spacey was made a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to theatre and won the Evening Standard and Olivier Awards for Best Actor for his stage role in The Iceman Cometh, as well as a Tony Award® for Best Supporting Actor in Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers. Mumbai, 18th February: As we draw closer to the 15th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend & Awards in Tampa Bay, Florida, the Academy held a press conference on the lawns of the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, today. Friends of IIFA, members from the film fraternity were present today along with U.S. Ambassador Peter Haas, and the Tampa Bay delegation to show their support for the upcoming celebrations in the United States of America. The 15th Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend and the Tata Motors IIFA Awards will be held from the 23rd – 26th of April.
Actors Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bipasha Basu and music director Pritam were on hand to announce the details of the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend. Leading the delegation from Tampa were Mayor of Tampa Bay – Bob Buckhorn, Hillsborough County Commissioner – Al Higginbotham and Santiago Corrada, President and Chief Executive Officer of Visit Tampa Bay and the IIFA hosts from Tampa Bay, Dr. Kiran Patel and Dr. (Mrs.) Pallavi Patel.
The 15th edition of the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend in April 2014 is set to include multiple star-studded events including the IIFA Rocks (a fashion and music spectacular), the IIFA Magic of the Movies & Technical Awards, and the crown jewel Tata Motors IIFA Awards.
The Tata Motors IIFA Awards will be hosted by Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar. The first set of star performers at the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend include Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha, Bipasha Basu, Pritam and Vir Das among others. The performances would be choreographed by the internationally-renowned Shiamak Davar. More stars would be announced in the next few weeks.
The sale of tickets for the Tata Motors IIFA Awards has been brisk with more than 15000 tickets being already sold without any announcement of performing stars. The response from the audience is phenomenal and the Indian contingent is looking forward to the first-ever IIFA Celebrations in America.
Business events include the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum which focuses on business opportunities across the two geographies, the Global Leadership Honours and a Media and Entertainment Strategy Summit led by Ernst & Young and FICCI’s Entertainment division.
The FICCI IIFA Global Business Forum will take place over two days (24th & 25th April) at the Tampa Convention Center. Hosted by the University of South Florida College of Business, the business forum will be addressed by several leading visionaries and business leaders including Indian IT visionary, founder and Executive Chairman of Infosys, Mr. Narayan Murthy and FICCI President Siddharth Birla. The business forum’s verticals will focus on renewable energy, pharma, healthcare & life sciences, tourism, IT and cyber security, infrastructure, education and higher education.

Los Angeles, 13th January: The International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) Weekend is all set to make its American debut as they bring the magic of Indian Cinema to Tampa Bay, Florida. The 15th edition of the IIFA Weekend & Awards will be held this year from the 24th – 26th of April. IIFA management along with Bollywood superstars Anil Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are currently on a press tour in the United States, having made their first pit-stop today in the home to Hollywood, Los Angeles.
On the second leg of the tour and in the host city, Tampa, IIFA today announced its celebrations ahead of the film industry’s highly anticipated weekend extravaganza which is set to include film briefings, the IIFA Film Workshop, the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum, IIFA Rocks, IIFA Magic of the Movies & Technical Awards and the crown jewel of the Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend, the TATA Motors IIFA Awards.
