CinemaCon 2022, Day 4: Big Screen Achievement Awards + Closing Night Party

CinemaCon 2022 came to its traditional close with the Big Screen Achievement Awards and Closing Night Party, honoring notable acting and filmmaking talent, most of whom involved in upcoming releases featured throughout the week at the various studio presentations. Likely owing to the ongoing pandemic, the lineup for the final night was much smaller than in previous years, plus two awards, the inaugural Trailblazer of the Year and the Entertainment Icon of the Decade, were respectively given earlier in the week to Viola Davis and Dwayne Johnson during their appearances at their current films' studios' official presentations. This year's complete list of honorees for the awards night:

  • CinemaCon Star of the Year: Zoe Saldaña
  • Star of Tomorrow: Glen Powell
  • Rising Star of the Year: Abby Ryder Fortson
  • CinemaCon Vanguard Award: Rachel McAdams
  • Comedy Star of the Year: Billy Eichner
  • Cinema Vérité Award: Robert De Niro

Also due to the pandemic, the usual pre-awards show press conferences understandably did not take place this year, and so I made an earlier than usual departure from the convention after the final studio presentation of the week, from Lionsgate.

And so ends another full springtime week at CinemaCon. Hopefully I will be returning on April 24 - 27, 2023 for CinemaCon 2023!

CinemaCon 2022, Day 2: Trade Show

As usual, the CinemaCon trade show floor and demonstration suites opened their doors to attendees in time for lunch on Day 2, but despite all initial outward appearances, it did not take long for the ever-lingering effects of the pandemic to be glaringly obvious. Where three short years ago the Julius and Augustus Ballrooms at Caesars Palace Las Vegas were more or less packed with vendors, the amount of unused space, either left empty or, in the case of the more tech-centered Augustus, filled out with tables and chairs.

That all said, what vendors were there conducted business as usual with typically eager and enthusiastic convention attendees. First, down the escalators to the more typically active of the two halls, the food and drink-dominated Julius Ballroom...

The beloved Los Angeles-based arthouse exhibitor
Cinelounge made its trade show debut to
tout its equally (or more?) beloved popcorn,
which has already been served at the Colosseum the last two days.

Now, a trip up the escalators to the Augustus Ballroom, and the more tech-oriented vendors...

Dolby, as usual, was the big draw in this room.
Once again, the film tech giant did not
have a larger demonstration suite at the convention.

With the more widely known 4D cinema technologies,
4DX and MX4D, not having a large presence this year, a third,
4D E-Motion, picked up the slack with a demonstration booth.
