With the (in)famously unauthorized, dramatized 1980s Los Angeles Lakers miniseries Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty currently running on (and recently renewed for season two by) HBO, one of its central characters, basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, is giving his side of the story with They Call Me Magic, a four-episode documentary series on Apple TV+. While the series does not debut on the streaming service until next Friday, April 22; and the series had its first public showing at the SXSW Festival in March, Johnson hosted a premiere screening of the first episode last night, Thursday, April 15, at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood. Below are his opening remarks, delivered to an audience of luminaries that included former "Showtime"-era Lakers teammates Michael Cooper, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Norm Nixon, Jamaal Wilkes, and A.C. Green; and former player, coach, and team General Manager, Jerry West.
