Movie Music Monday: The street sounds of Gully Boy, real vs. reel life

Film Flam Flummox

Zoya Akhtar's hip-hop music drama Gully Boy is inspired by the real lives of Indian rappers Naezy and Divine, and while she and co-writer Reema Kagti do not directly retell the pair's actual stories, real and reel lives converge at a crucial moment in the film where their 2015 viral hit "Mere Gully Mein" ("In My Street") is recreated. The song and the making of its video occurs in the film at a similar juncture in the Naezy-inspired lead character Murad's (Ranveer Singh) career as an Internet-driven, game-changing breakthrough. More important from Akhtar's storytelling perspective, however, are the broader thematic parallels. As propulsive and infectious as it is musically--after all, it's easier to use an existing earworm than to attempt to create an original one--lyrically it also reinforces the film's key message of giving voice to the too-often-overlooked urban reality for many in India and, most importantly, celebrating the vibrant, living community that fuels both the central character's and his real life model's art.

Here is the original video by Divine featuring Naezy:

Here is the number as it appears in Gully Boy, with Singh gamely providing his own vocals. His co-star, charismatic newcomer Siddhant Chaturvedi, lipsynchs vocals provided by Divine:

As a bonus, here is Bombay 70, director Disha Noyonika Rindani's award-winning 2014 documentary short subject on Naezy:

Gully Boy is now playing in cinemas in North America, India, and worldwide.

Movie Music Monday: Nas, One9 & Erik Parker on Time Is Illmatic

Film Flam Flummox

After making a strong splash on the festival circuit and serving as the centerpiece of a successful concert tour, Nas: Time Is Illmatic, the entertaining and illuminating documentary commemoration/exploration of the hip hop artist's seminal 1994 debut album Illmatic, is now looking to parlay the enthusiasm and near-universal acclaim into some well deserved awards buzz. As part of the campaign, director/producer One9, and writer/producer Erik Parker and the artist himself took part in a candid and lively discussion to an over-capacity crowd after a special screening held at the Landmark in Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 21. Beyond the usual Q&A insights, the event was highlighted by an impromptu live performance by one young attendee, as one can see in the complete video of the event below.

Nas: Time Is Illmatic is now available on demand from Tribeca Film.

Movie Music Monday: Priyanka Chopra gets "Exotic" with Pitbull

Film Flam Flummox

While they certainly are enjoyable listens and show genuine musical potential, Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra's first two singles did come with a twinge of disappointment. If "In My City" showed a ready-to-go, mass appeal pop sensibility, and "Erase" showed a refreshing willingness to experiment with harder, more underground beats and textures, what was missing was a dash of her unique selling point as far as the American music market is concerned: a taste of authentic Indian spice. Thankfully, the aptly named "Exotic" not only finally incorporates South Asian rhythms and Hindi lyrics, but also reflects and encapsulates why I've always gravitated and connected so strongly with Indian film music: how it so effortlessly fuses a veritable world of sounds into a seamless and distinctive whole. In addition to Indian sounds and Western dance pop, the track also gets a strong infusion of hip-hop courtesy of Pitbull, who gets a "featuring" credit though the vocal split between him and Chopra is more akin to a 50/50 duet. That said, the voice, literally and figuratively, that dominates is Chopra's, and if the lyrics remain very much in the less-than-profound, merely functional pop realm, that this track finds her carving out a distinctly Desi-honoring musical identity will go a long way toward winning over doubters in her home country.
