F3Stage Review: Dog Man: The Musical is silly, spirited family fun

Dog Man: The Musical is a project that would be easy to dismiss out of hand. A stage musical adaptation of Dav Pilkey's enormously popular children's book series, it is all too easy to write off as a crass IP cash grab -- and, if only glancing at images of TheatreWorksUSA's touring production, the fairly modest production values would appear to reinforce that notion. But as with many things, context is key, and simplicity is not only by design, but also why the show works as well as it does: it is, quite simply, fun.

That simplicity manifests right upon entrance into the theatre, with the set by scenic designer Timothy R. Mackabee. A cardboard-heavy approximation of the interior of a treehouse, it sets the stage (puns not intended) for not only the overall do-it-yourself vibe of the aesthetic, but also squarely within the mindset and perspective of its main characters: fifth graders George (Marcus Phillips, coming straight off his impressive work in East West Players' powerful production of Spring Awakening) and Harold (Max Torrez). In addition to being best friends, they are also creative partners, having written and drawn the ongoing comic book exploits of superhero Captain Underpants (itself a successful book and multimedia franchise by Pilkey) and, yes, the titular canine-human hybrid cop, Dog Man. The premise of the adaptation by librettist/lyricist Kevin Del Aguila and composer Brad Alexander is at once inspired and, yes, simple. George and Harold decide to take their art to the next step by turning one of their Dog Man adventures, A Tale of Two Kitties, into a musical.

That is, in fact, the name of one of Pilkey's actual books, and Dog Man: The Musical follows its original plotline to the letter. After a brief recap of the character's origin (accident leaves a cop and his K-9 partner to be merged into one literally dog-headed man after an experimental lives-saving surgery -- just go with it), Dog Man (Brian Owen) must protect the city from evil cat Petey's (Bryan Daniel Porter) latest scheme, which involves him creating a clone of himself (L.R. Davidson); but in addition to these two kitties is another looming threat, that of nefarious fish Flippy (Chadaé Nichol).

Yes, it's all very silly, but quite willfully so -- more than simply being primarily targeted at theatergoers around the same age as George and Harold, Del Aguila, Alexander, and director/choreographer Jen Wineman quite vividly place theatergoers of all ages into that boundless, anything goes space of tween-age imagination. The "cheap"-looking DIY aesthetic from the makeshift set pieces, props, costumes (by Heidi Leigh Hanson), and masks is very much in line with what a show put on by 10-year-olds would actually look like. But, more importantly, Dog Man: The Musical is in line with what such a show would feel like, and that's to the massive credit of the energy and exuberance of the gifted and crazily hard working cast of six. They seamlessly shuffle between their primary characters and places in the ensemble, always tirelessly giving their all to their comedic characterizations, Wineman's inventive choreography, and Del Aguila and Alexander's tuneful songs. It is in the latter where it is the adults in the audience will have a something a bit more savor than the kids, with the meta conceit allowing Del Aguila to add witty, knowing references to musical theater to go along with the broader gags.

But one does not need to be grown up to appreciate the infectiously catchy score, and chances are people of all ages, Dog Man fan or newcomer, walking out of theater after its brisk 90-minute runtime will do so singing -- either in their heads or aloud -- the earworm that is the anthemic "Dog Man" theme song. Dog Man: The Musical may ultimately be "just" a breezy family entertainer, but that it feels so effortless is a testament to the substantial talent, thought, and craft that brought it to theatrical life.

TheatreWorks USA's production of Dog Man: The Musical is now running at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City through Sunday, January 7; the tour will then continue to various cities across North America through 2024.

F3Stage: Blues for an Alabama Sky makes its belated bow in Los Angeles

Twenty-seven years after it was first staged in Atlanta, Pearl Cleage's celebrated Harlem Renaissance era play Blues fror an Alabama Sky finally made its debut in Los Angeles last night, Wednesday, April 13, under the direction of that premiere production's original lead star, Phylicia Rashad. A number of notables from Hollywood were in attendance for the opening night performance at the Mark Taper Forum.

Today, Chance the Rapper premiered the official trailer to his highly-anticipated concert film, Magnificent Coloring World, after previously releasing the teaser trailer in May. The preview revealed an August 13 release date, with presale tickets available to fans starting next Friday, July 16.The film is set to premiere in Los Angeles on Aug 13, followed by a New York premiere on August 14, exclusively at AMC Theatres. Their historic partnership marks the first time an artist has independently distributed a film through AMC Theatres.

In 2017, on the heels of taking home 3 Grammy® Awards for his mixtape Coloring Book, Chance the Rapper performed and filmed a secret concert for his biggest fans in Chicago. The film shares this never-before-seen footage for the first time on the big screen. Directed by Jake Shreier (Robot & Frank, Paper Towns), and featuring a stage and sound design like none other, Magnificent Coloring World is the movie and music ticket of the summer. Chance appeared on Good Morning America where he discusses more details on his original set design for Magnificent Coloring World.

Staying true to his independent artistry, Chance led the editing process and is also self-distributing the film through his House of Kicks umbrella. The House of Kicks is the film house that has become home to Chance, creating an artistic pod where he is reimagining music, film, and virtual experiences.

F3Stage Review: The Central Park Five opera powerfully retells the true tragedy of injustice

Classical-style opera is generally associated with stories and, more often than not, works from many years ago. But the artform can also be used, and rather effectively at that, to tell contemporary stories, particularly those that navigate the often roller coaster gamut of emotion within human existence.  Such is the powerful case (no pun intended) with composer Anthony Davis and librettist Richard Wesley's take on the true tale of tragic injustice that befell the then-so-named The Central Park Five, currently in its world premiere production mounted by the Long Beach Opera.

Three decades may have passed since the five of the title--aged only 14 to 16, four African-American, one Latino--were wrongly convicted of the 1989 beating and rape of a white female jogger in New York's Central Park, but awareness of the story is probably even more widespread today than it was back then, thanks to Ava DuVernay's celebrated miniseries When They See Us, which began streaming on Netflix literally (and completely coincidentally) a couple of weeks ago.  But beyond also being the subject of a near-simultaneously released, higher profile project, this shameful blight in American history could sadly not more  be relevant to and reflective of the social and political climate of today.  Despite a glaring lack of concrete evidence, law enforcement was quick to criminalize young Antron McCray (Derrell Acon), Yusef Salaam (Cedric Berry), Raymond Santana (Orson Van Gay), Kevin Richardson (Bernard Holcomb), and Korey Wise (Nathan Granner), and forced them into false confessions without adult, let alone professional legal, counsel.  A voracious news media was all too quick and eager to go along with the narrative, with prominent figures amplifying the sentiment to even more sensationalistic and alarmist levels, including a certain brash real estate developer (played by Thomas Segen) still many years removed from his eventual perch in the highest political office of the country but already exhibiting and expressing his now-even-more-familiar blowhard attitudes and viewpoints on particular demographic groups.

The one glaring misstep in Wesley's libretto is that depiction of now-45, not in terms of accuracy but in falling into the trap of going for the cheap and easy joke; the second act opens with no less than him on a phone call while sitting on a golden toilet.  But as the term "operatic" is often applied, trafficking in broad strokes to convey a greater truth is a convention in the genre, and having an exaggerated, if cartoonishly so, 45 as well as an amorphous character billed as "The Masque" (Zeffin Quinn Hollis) representing, at various points, either the oppressively long arm of the law, public sentiment, or White Paranoia itself effectively depict the monolithic system that the five and their truth was (and, ultimate, far too belated exoneration aside, still are) up against.  Similarly, with the late exception of Wise, the one of the group who was sent to an adult prison, the five themselves are treated more as a collective than individuals, but so speaks to the larger point of how young men of color, particularly African-Americans, regardless of individual personality and circumstance, are viewed in the same ever-suspicious lens from all angles.

Director Andreas Mitisek's physical production further reinforces this notion in at once spartan and overwhelming fashion.  Doors and screens are often the only objects on stage with the actors, but they more than do their jobs practically and metaphorically, representing the various spaces, rooms, and cells and offering surfaces on which to project many archival video clips, images, and newspaper headlines, smothering the protagonists in their humiliating negativity and prejudice.  Cannily, Davis's score, which pulls as much from jazz influences as it does classical ones, also reflects the persistent tension between black and white, truth and untruth in his copious use of dissonance between the vocal lines and those played by the orchestra.  With the uniformly strong-voiced cast and the gifted musicians in the pit landing all the notes beautifully and memorably, the effect is appropriately jarring and discomfiting in the best way,  That applies to  The Central Park Five  as a whole, an overall beautifully composed and produced work that dares to powerfully remind of an uncomfortable case in recent history and underscore how the circumstances and atmosphere that led to such a tragic injustice are just as much, if not even more, overtly present in the here and now.

Joining the celebrated creative crew of librettist Dominique Morisseau and director Des McAnuff for the big Tinseltown unveiling were the last surviving original group member, Otis Williams--on whose memoir the show is based--and a wide array of luminaries from every sphere of the entertainment industry, as seen below.

Ain't Too Proud is now playing at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles through Sunday, September 30; the company then moves on to Toronto before landing at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway in spring 2019.
