CHANCE THE RAPPER PUTS
“THE NEGRO PROBLEM” FRONT & CENTER
ON THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
Last night, Grammy-winning artist and global innovator Chance the Rapper appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a profound evening that bridged his historic past with his visionary present.
In a poignant interview, Chance reflected on the decade since his cultural juggernaut Coloring Book (2016) redefined the music industry. He also discussed how his recent global travels—from art fairs in Venice to the historic Black Star Line Festival in Accra—and his deep dive into the history of Marcus Garvey’s shipping line informed the creative DNA of his critically acclaimed new album, Star Line.
The night culminated in a breathtaking performance of “The Negro Problem.” The performance was a visceral piece of performance art, centering on the song’s raw exploration of systemic disparity, maternal healthcare risks for Black women, and the over-policing of Black youth. As Chance navigated the heavy themes, a series of strong visual tableaus played out on the screens behind him, depicting poignant scenarios that mirrored his lyrics—from the militarized reality of youth in the city to the enduring weight of generational trauma.
