CinemaCon 2021 in absentia, days 2 - 4 post-mortem

Film Flam Flummox

Good intentions can only get one so far, especially when it comes to attempting to cover an event like CinemaCon "remotely." In recent years, given the rise of social media and the urge to capture the free PR that comes with "going viral," in 2018 and 2019, it was not unusual for major studios to officially release trailers and previews to the general public following within hours, if that, of their premiere during a presentation at the convention, so I thought I'd be able to offer some barebones coverage based on what would be made officially available outside the walls of the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. But perhaps owing to the scaled back nature of the studio presentations during this unusual, mid-pandemic, summertime edition, only Sony Pictures released a CinemaCon-premiered to the public during the convention week, for Spider-Man: No Way Home. The other studios that held formal presentations, United Artists Releasing/MGM, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures/Focus Features, Paramount, and Lionsgate (Walt Disney simply screened in entirety its upcoming Marvel Studios guaranteed blockbuster-to-be Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, due out in cinemas September 3, which I have screened locally a week ago) opted not to release any of their new trailers to the general non-attending press nor the public during these four days, so, alas, the de facto Day 1 piece will be the only one for CinemaCon 2021.

Here's hoping I can resume my 20-year coverage of the National Association of Theatre Owners' official annual convention in 2022!

(Very special thanks to Walt Disney Studios, Focus Features, Lionsgate, and Heather Lewandoski and the entire team at Rogers & Cowan for all their helpful and generous assistance at the convention, as well as Mitch Neuhauser and the CinemaCon crew and John Fithian and the National Association of Theatre Owners)

CinemaCon 2021 in absentia, day 1: Sony Pictures

Film Flam Flummox

Sony Pictures

After being notably absent in the last edition in 2019, Sony Pictures, in a sign of support of the COVID-ravaged motion picture exhibition industry, made its return to CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners in the Monday evening official kickoff slot to the week's activity. Among the previews showcased during the presentation was the long-awaited first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony and Marvel Studios' third collaboration on a solo screen adventure for the ever-popular webslinger. Considering that this first official look at the film is only now dropping less than four months in advance from its cinema release date on December 17, fans had anticipated that the unusually short (for a tentpole blockbuster, that is, for the first look typically comes many months, if not a full year, in advance) lead meant that it would confirm the much-rumored return appearances of former Peter Parkers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield alongside current Spidey Tom Holland. Alas, the only surprise appearance is that of a pumpkin bomb (suggesting a more villainous return, that of Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin from 2002's first Spider-film), with previously reported guest stars Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. Octopus/Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) from 2004's Spider-Man 2 appearing in the slick, admirably spoiler-light spot, which Sony officially released following its unveiling at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Stay tuned here all week for ongoing coverage of as much as I possibly can at home at CinemaCon 2021!

(Very special thanks to Sony Pictures, Heather Lewandoski and the entire team at Rogers & Cowan for all their helpful and generous assistance at the convention, as well as Mitch Neuhauser and the CinemaCon crew and John Fithian and the National Association of Theatre Owners)

CinemaCon 2021: in absentia coverage preview

Film Flam Flummox

Due to circumstances that, I must stress, are beyond my control and most decidedely not by my choice (I had my travel and accommodations booked, and I was ready to go), I will not able do my traditional annual coverage of CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, which I have been doing nearly every year since 2001, when it was still known as ShoWest. To say that I am highly disappointed by this most unanticipated, blindsiding development is a gross understatement. That being said, in what has been an increasing trend the last couple of years, trailers and/or special previews of major, upcoming cinema releases that have their premiere during in-person, on-stage studio presentations at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace have been released to the general press and public online within a day. So while I won't be relaying second hand accounts of what actually takes place in Las Vegas this coming week (after all, one can simply go to other outlets that are blessed to be there, and nothing I say from the home office will add anything of interest nor value), I will report on any CinemaCon-premiered trailers and/or previews that are made public during the week of the convention. This, of course, means coverage far less comprehensive than I have given the last couple of decades; my physical absence means I will not be able to report on NATO head John Fithian's annual "State of the Industry" address, various seminars, Cinema Concepts's always rousing reel of the year's top box office grossers worldwide, notable displays and trends the trade show floor, the hallway movie displays and the changes to the CinemaCon entryway, and the various other you-are-there, on-the-scene coverage I always have done (and, of course, there will also be no updates on my Twitter and Instagram feeds, since I am not physically there), but I hope what I am able and allowed to do will be of some interest.

Stay tuned here all week for ongoing coverage of as much as I possibly can at home at CinemaCon 2021!

(Very special thanks to Heather Lewandoski and the entire team at Rogers & Cowan for all their helpful and generous assistance at the convention, as well as Mitch Neuhauser and the CinemaCon crew and John Fithian and the National Association of Theatre Owners)
