Movie Music Monday: Jimmy Scott croons under the "Sycamore Trees" of Twin Peaks

Film Flam Flummox

The legendary jazz artist Jimmy Scott passed away last Thursday, June 12, at the ripe age of 88. While he enjoyed a career that lasted well over half a century, I think I speak for many in my generation that my first introduction to his piercingly beautiful and expressive contralto voice by way of the David Lynch-directed 1991 series finale of ABC's Twin Peaks. Scott appeared in what would prove to be one of the cult classic's most indelible sequences, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan) journey into the red-curtained underworld dimension (or some reasonable equivalent thereof--this is Lynch, after all) known as the Black Lodge, crooning a typically haunting Angelo Badalamenti/Lynch-penned ballad, "Sycamore Trees." Since Scott and the song didn't appear until the very end of the show's run, it was not included in television series' best-selling soundtrack album, but Lynch had the smarts and class to include the never-before-released complete studio version of the song on the soundtrack album of the 1992 feature film prequel, Fire Walk with Me--never mind the tune itself never appears in the film proper though portions of the instrumental track pop up in the score. Below, revisit the memorably surreal scene that unleashed the wonders of Scott's vocal gifts upon an unsuspecting portion of the series' (sadly dwindled, at that point) viewing audience, and then the full track as it appears on the Fire Walk with Me soundtrack album before CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution releases the comprehensive Twin Peaks The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set on July 29.

The Twin Peaks The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set hits shelves on July 29, 2014 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution.

Web Wednesday: The Time Is Now! for Eddie Goines & friends

Film Flam Flummox

With the increasingly widespread availability and accessibility of digital technologies for not only production but also distribution, lots of up-and-coming talent both in front of and behind the camera have seized the open opportunity, taking to the World Wide Web to create and release their own homegrown projects. Most of these projects have taken the form of short films and web series, whether comedies, dramas, or all other recognizable traditional media genres; or even taken tweeting, Instagram-ing, and all manner of social media posting to the next level with do-it-yourself reality shows. But given the direct-to-viewer/consumer nature of Internet distribution, it's a bit surprising that few have thought to take the time- and older-technology-tested middle ground format between narrative and "documentary": that of the old-fashioned variety show. Actor/producer Eddie Goines recognizes that now could not be a better time for a such a direct showcase for the entire spectrum of emerging artists, using the classic structure for an original one-hour special recorded before a live audience, the aptly titled The Time Is Now!

Being an emerging artist himself with a growing list of film and television credits, Goines naturally uses the show to display the range of his own talents, primarily through some amusing location-shot, largely impression-driven comedy vignettes interspersed between the live stage segments--one of which is his own impressive one-man monologue piece. But not for nothing is above-the-title billing given to "Eddie Goines & Friends," for while he is a consistent presence throughout the hour, he's not an overwhelming one, generously giving others opportunities to shine. He cedes host duties to the seasoned and entertaining pair of comedian Guy Torry and radio personality Tammi Mac, and also given their moments to entertain both the live and home audience are another familiar face, comedian Chris Spencer, and a pair of less familiar musical acts. The latter points up the great potential for The Time Is Now! to become a regularly produced series of specials, for Goines and friends not only appear to be on to something but just beginning to scratch the proverbial surface, for one can see how many other artists from different areas (dancers, other actors doing other performance pieces, live sketches) could benefit of the showcase--and how the home viewer can become acquainted with the talents of many more artists ripe and ready for discovery. For (no pun intended) now, though, The Time Is Now! is a solid hour of entertainment readily available in the thick of the summer rerun and filler programming season on television. Movie Music Monday: Sankara Eye Foundation brings Sonu Nigam's soul Klose to Southern California

Film Flam Flummox

The first time I saw Indian music superstar Sonu Nigam perform live was in August of 2006; while at that point he was already long one of the leading playback singers in the Indian film industry, with many hit songs from numerous hit films under his belt, his "Simply Sonu" tour stop in Southern California was held in the large but fairly lower-profile venue of the Terrace Theatre in Long Beach. Even so, his formidable stage presence, ease with an audience, boundless energy, and--above all else--that golden, mellifluous voice sounding just as flawless as his studio-recorded tracks made for a night that felt like it was the hottest ticket in the biggest venue, never mind the fairly moderate production values of a tight but talented band and backup singing troupe, and a handful of backup dancers.

Flash ahead eight years later to this past Saturday, May 31, and Nigam's "Klose to My Soul" tour has not only has its local stop in one of the largest and leading local venues, the gigantic Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, but also has near-capacity audience to witness Nigam perform backed by no less than a 45-member orchestra. But even with the larger, cavernous hall and a larger group sharing the stage, Nigam was the clear star, just edging out the memorable material he's lent his voice to over the years, from his now-signature song, the title tune to Nikhil Adhvani's classic 2003 tearjerker Kal Ho Naa Ho--which, as in the show I was at eight years ago, was the big finale here--to more recent hits such as the gorgeous and emotional "Abhu Mujh Mein Kahin" from 2012's Agneepath.

But remaining just as large as Nigam's talent and charisma is his heart, for the proceeds to this show and the tour as a whole go to Sankara Eye Foundation, which reaches out to the rural poor and provide quality eye care free of cost to the needy by building operationally self-sufficient super specialty eye care hospitals across India, with the ultimate goal being the complete eradication of curable blindness in India. It's a fitting cause to be paired with a voice so vividly expressive, especially when experienced live.
