Film Flam Flummox

PRESS RELEASE

AMY SCHUMER TO RECEIVE
CINEMACON®BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMER
OF THE YEAR AWARD”

UNIVERSAL PICTURES’ TRAINWRECK
ARRIVES IN THEATRES ON
JULY 17, 2015

WASHINGTON D.C. (March 18, 2015) – Amy Schumer will receive the “CinemaCon® Breakthrough Performer of the Year Award,” it was announced today by Mitch Neuhauser, Managing Director of CinemaCon. CinemaCon , the official convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), will be held April 20 - 23, 2015, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Schumer will be presented with this special honor at the “CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards” ceremony to take place on Thursday evening, April 23, in The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The Coca-Cola Company, the official presenting sponsor of CinemaCon, will host the final night gala awards program.

“Already a breakout comedic star on television with her hit series Inside Amy Schumer, Amy has proven that she has an innate ability to take the everyday topics related to life and make them so funny that she has audiences wondering just what she will say next,” noted Neuhauser. “With her upcoming breakout role in Trainwreck, Amy pairs her provocative and hilarious writing style with Judd Apatow’s honest comedic look at what it is like to live in the world today. We could not be more excited that we get the chance to honor such an incredible talent with the ‘CinemaCon Breakthrough Performer of the Year Award.”

Schumer can be seen this summer starring in Universal Pictures Trainwreck, in which arrives in theatres on July 17, 2015. Written by Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow, the comedy stars Schumer as a woman who lives her life without apologies, even when maybe she should apologize. Trainwreck co-stars Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, John Cena, Tilda Swinton and LeBron James, and is produced by Apatow through his Apatow Productions alongside Barry Mendel.

She is the creator, star, writer and executive producer of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated Inside Amy Schumer, which will return to Comedy Central for a third season on April 21. Schumer made her network debut in 2007 on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, which led to an appearance on 30 Rock and her own Comedy Central Presents special. Her other television credits include the one-hour stand-up special Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff, as well as roles in Louie, Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Delocated. On the big screen, Schumer was seen in the features Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Price Check.

CinemaCon , the official convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), will be held April 20 - 23, 2015, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

This year’s lunch will feature a salute to Clint Eastwood, complete with a one-on-one discussion on his filmmaking process and passion for the moviegoing experience, moderated by Stephen Galloway, Executive Features Editor of The Hollywood Reporter. Eastwood will also be presented with this year’s “Fandango Fan Choice Award”—an industry and CinemaCon tradition for nearly a decade—for his top-grossing 2014 film, American Sniper. Nominated for an Oscar® for Best Picture, Eastwood’s 34th film as a director is the year’s overwhelming fan favorite, as voted by the majority of moviegoers on Fandango. The award will be presented to Eastwood at the luncheon by Fandango President Paul Yanover.

CinemaCon is deeply honored to host this luncheon to recognize a true legend, Mr. Clint Eastwood, for all he has done for the motion picture industry worldwide throughout his unprecedented career. To hear his thoughts on filmmaking and what the theatrical experience means to him is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is what CinemaCon is all about,” Neuhauser states.

Since its inception, Wednesdays at CinemaCon have been geared toward the filmmaking experience—being able to hear from incredible filmmakers on their passion for cinema has always been imperative to the convention. Past filmmakers who have been on hand for this annual CinemaCon event include Ang Lee, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Oliver Stone, Christopher Nolan, Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro, Jeffrey Katzenberg and George Lucas.

“Every year for CinemaCon , we survey our Fandango film fans, asking them to select their favorite movie of the year, and this year’s choice was undeniably American Sniper,” a very special film that has been incredibly popular on Fandango and we’re sure will be a favorite of film fans for many years to come,” says Fandango President Paul Yanover. “We are excited to present the award to Mr. Eastwood.”

Over the course of his illustrious career, Eastwood has received many lifetime achievement honors and has been acclaimed for his work as a director, producer and actor, including four Oscar® wins for his work as a director and producer on the Best Picture winners Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven. His most recent film, American Sniper, is the top-grossing film of 2014 and has grossed more than $500 million worldwide.

F3Stage: The Hunchback of Notre Dame opens at Paper Mill Playhouse tonight

Film Flam Flummox

After a highly popular and acclaimed run at the La Jolla Playhouse last fall, Disney's North American premiere production of the stage adaptation of composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz's The Hunchback of Notre Dame makes its east coast debut at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey tonight, Sunday, March 15. The key creatives of director Scott Schwartz and librettist Peter Parnell return from that engagement, as do principal cast members Michael Arden (Quasimodo), Patrick Page (Dom Claude Frollo), Ciara Renée (Esmeralda), Andrew Samonsky (Captain Phoebus), and Erik Liberman (Clopin)--and early word from the preview period is that while certain adjustments have been made here and there to text, it is by and large the same piece that played in San Diego. That's a good thing if you ask me, for while it certainly had room for some further fine tuning, the La Jolla production was an unforgettable emotional sweep of an experience, blending the best qualities of the underrated 1996 Disney animated film, James Lapine's 1999-2002 world premiere production in Berlin, Victor Hugo's original novel, and a number of clever and inspired original touches into an intensely intimate yet spectacular whole. My full La Jolla opening night review from last November is here.
